Wellsville/Communal
The Hairdressers of Wellsville, a salon operated by Laura Pielow and Linda Derrick, is closing after 46 years in business. The owners took the occasion to thank the customers and community who supported the shop over the decades. The closing marks the end of a long-running local business.
Scio/Political
The Town of Scio will hold a public hearing on Tuesday, Oct. 27 on Introductory Local Law Number 1 of 2026. If adopted, the law would allow the town to exceed the state's 2% property tax levy cap when it sets its 2027 budget. The hearing gives residents a chance to comment before the town board decides whether to adopt the override.
Scio/Schools
Scio Central School District voters will be asked on Dec. 17 to authorize a capital project costing up to $5.7 million. The Board of Education approved sending the plan to voters at its Oct. 14 meeting. Planned work covers reconstruction, renovations and improvements to the main school building and the bus garage, plus fuel island upgrades. The financing plan would draw $300,000 from the district's Capital Reserve Fund and authorize up to $5.4 million in bonds and notes. Voting will run from noon to 8 p.m. in the Rigby Gymnasium foyer, and the board minutes did not give an estimated tax impact.
